Ladder and Pole (Pladder?) Setup

Ladder and Pole (Pladder?) Setup

In order to get in the right location and the right Point of View, to take the Combat Air Museum panoramic photo, I put together this ladder / pole combination. It consists of a 12 foot stepladder with an 8 / 16 foot 'painter's pole' running up the center and passing through the small hole in the very top of the ladder. The bright orange object just above the fifth step is a Post Level used to make sure the pole is plumb and true.

In this photo, my D700 is mounted at the top of the pole using a Manfrotto 488RC2 ball head...and yes, my camera strap is clipped to the top of the pole as a safety measure..! The pole is extended here to about 15 feet so it extends some three feet above the top platform of the ladder. This allows me to stand on the last 'safe' step of the ladder and still be able to see and frame the shot using "LiveView" to make sure of my composition.

The base of the ladder is large enough to provide a lot of stability and also acts to keep the camera and pole in the correct alignment I use a radio release when I am taking shots with this so that I can maintain my balance and keep my hands away from the camera to eliminate any vibration. I do one button press to activate Live View, double check the image..and then a second press triggers the 7 bracketed shots.

This rig also will allow me to stand about half-way up the ladder and extend the painter's pole up another 10-12 feet while still feeling fairly (!) comfortable about having my gear close to 25 feet above ground..

big electrical pole and a lightpost/stoplight pole.

my scanner is crap so to get decent pictures from my 16mm microfilm escapades (110 reloads, submini/spy cameras) i have to actually use my enlarger. i'm still learning how to work it, but here's the first enlargement from my Minolta-16 P, using Copex microfilm.

the enlarger isn't designed for this small format, and won't go high enough on an 8x10 to fill the frame. also, i had to improvise a 16mm negative carrier by sandwiching the negative between two strips of 35mm film, with a rectangle cut out. works well! what you see is a black border where the mask rectangle is bigger than the image, followed by the rough edge of the rectangle cutout.

print was still wet when i put it on the scanner. this ain't perfect, but it's proof of concept. and i think this is a strong image too!

Technical Pro XTREME1501 Subwoofer, Black

The Xtreme1501 is a Carpeted 15 Inch Powered Subwoofer. This speaker is for anyone looking to beef up their low end and achieve a thunderous low frequency output from their speaker system. The Xtreme1501 has a total peak power of 1500 watts. This is the type of power you need for a large sized venue such as a live stage show, large studio space, showroom or in a nightclub. This subwoofer is an ACTIVE speaker which means you do not need any additional amplifier to power this speaker. The system comes complete with a satellite amplifier that can power two up to two additional loudspeakers. Use this amplifier to power additional satellite speakers orbiting the subwoofer. The inputs are 1/4 Inch and XLR. Connect any standard playback devices or mixer to this connection and send your source through one of the best subwoofers on the market. The passive pass-through outputs of the subwoofer are 1/4 Inch and XLR. Use these pass-through outputs to send the signal to another power subwoofer. Using the outputs of the satellite amplifier you can choose between two speakon and two banana connections. You can use these outputs to power two other satellite speakers. The woofer is 15 Inch with a massive 90ounce magnet and 3 Inch voice coil. This will deliver a clear translation of booming low end frequencies. There are separate volume controls for the subwoofer and the satellite speaker connections. This is key if you need to balance out your levels between the low frequencies coming out of the subwoofer and the mid/high frequencies coming out of the satellite speakers. Also inside you will find a switchable high pass filter for the satellite connections. If you are sending your whole signal into the subwoofer use the high pass filter.this will send the low frequencies to the booming subwoofer and the high frequencies will pass through to the mid/high satellite speakers. This is a professional set up meant to properly send your frequencies to the proper speakers.

The Law of Tort - 2nd edition. General editor: Ken Oliphant. Butterworths Common Law Series

The Law of Tort - 2nd edition. General editor: Ken Oliphant. Butterworths Common Law Series

A review by Phillip Taylor MBE. Richmond Green Chambers.

Ken Oliphant has brought together his excellent team of ten for the common law title ‘Tort’, or ‘Torts’ as some prefer it, as the second in this series from Butterworths which sets a very high standard throughout its 1700 pages.

The work provides an in-depth analysis of the modern law of torts set out in 30 chapters with a user-friendly index and rather a lot of footnotes which is to be expected when identifying principles derived from judicial decisions and legislation where you must have the detail. Under Oliphant’s guidance the team has produced a worthy rival for its heavyweight competitors with each bringing its own gifts to the practitioner, judge, academic lawyer and student. So what makes this work different?

The style is different and very much a trademark of the Butterworths stable of books to start with, and what I would expect from Butterworths. It provides a clear and authoritative exposition of the existing law with each chapter very much the domain of the individual distinguished contributor.

The section headings are well chosen signposts as Sir Malcolm Pill describes them in his original Foreword, and both practitioners and students will benefit from the further thought and study suggestions contained here. I welcome, particularly, the sorts of issues which are likely to be raised by a set of facts which may be given to me by my client, and I now know where to look for possible solutions set out clearly and logically as great guidance.

I am glad Andrew Grubb clarifies these principles as ‘Torts Law’ for that is what it is within the common law as a series of civil responsibilities which go with rights. The waffling word ‘obligations’, which is the current favourite term to define ‘tort’ as a compartment, is something Oliphant tries valiantly to do on page one, as just about every writer has done in the past, and he makes a very good go at it.

I have always enjoyed the argument about whether we have ‘tortious liability’ favoured by ‘you know who’ and his other judicially unorthodox brothers of the recent past who were keen on creating certain types of equity to get the right judicial answer, or ‘specific torts’.

I think the ‘torts’ have it at the moment but who knows what might happen during the twenty-first century with the internet revolution and digitalisation. Let’s just say it is a civil liability and use the rights/responsibilities concept and reasonableness rather than the Euro word ‘proportionate’ which translates better (apparently).

This book is also useful for judges as it gives a degree of guidance on what the accepted view of the law is whilst thinking about a reformulation or change in the direction of the law deemed appropriate to its time – what Denning actually tried to do. So, if you are in court look around for the Butterworths series and you will know where his lordship is coming from!

Grubb, as series editor, succeeds with his stated legal direction for these great literary contributions to the modern statements of law from Butterworths, who are the natural historic leaders with Halsbury. Oliphant and his team have produced great assistance on understanding torts so that the law itself is “less likely to be left undeveloped ‘marching…in the rear limping a little’” which Grubb quotes from a famous judicial aphorism by Windeyer J in Mount Isa Mines v Pusey.

The signposts are up with this common law series, and practitioners can take the direction they want for their own practice- mine is clearly this signposted direction with its welcome contribution to the literature and the understanding of the law of torts- it has helped and encouraged me to identify potential developments in the law, and advice to clients, and I thank the distinguished contributors for sharing their knowledge and views with people like me who practice and teach the subject to the public.

Butterworth, Deal visit 2011 Manufacture of the Year

Butterworth, Deal visit 2011 Manufacture of the Year

ROCKMART, Ga., Oct. 5, 2011 – Major Gen. Jim Butterworth, Georgia’s Adjutant General, traveled today to this Northwest Georgia city with Gov. Nathan Deal and Chris Cumminskey, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, to congratulate the employees at Meggitt Polymer and Composites for being named the 2011 Large Manufacturer of the Year by the Technical College System of Georgia and the Georgia Department of Economic Development.

Here, from the left, Butterworth, Deal and Cumminskie listen as Meggitt’s deputy president John Skubina explains how plant technicians use molds like this one for the engine intake of a Sikorsky CH-53 helicopter to make parts for that aircraft and many others during a tour of the company’s facilities.

Meggitt Polymer and Composites designs and develops aircraft seals, flexible fuel tanks and coatings, complex composite structures, smart ice protection systems and sub-assemblies, and interior panels and accessories for several civil and military, fixed and rotary wing aircraft, and military vehicles. Among them are the UH-72A Lakota, the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter and the Humvee, all of which are used by the Georgia Army and Air Guard. According to company officials, Meggitt also has a large number of Georgia Guardsmen and Reservists among its more than 1,000 employees.

“On behalf of our more than 14,000 Citizen-Soldiers and Airman, it’s my pleasure to be here to honor this great group of men and women,” Butterworth said. “It’s because of their commitment to quality that we in the Guard, and all the services, are able to do our jobs, confident that the equipment we operate is the among the best in the world.”

During his address to his fellow employees, Skubina said Meggitt has always understood the importance of what the Guard does, and it is that understanding that continually drives the company toward the highest standards of quality.

“We appreciate what the National Guard and all the services do for us,” Skubina said. “As we continue to stand behind each and every product we manufacture, we will continue to stand behind those among us who leave our ranks to join yours when ever they get the call, however long they may be called to serve.”

Kodak Infared HIE

Kodak Infared HIE

Black-and-white infrared negative films are sensitive to wavelengths in the 700 to 900 nm near infrared spectrum, and most also have a sensitivity to blue light wavelengths. The notable halation effect or glow often seen in the highlights of infrared photographs is an artifact of Kodak High Speed Infrared (HIE) black-and-white negative film and not an artifact of infrared light. The glow or blooming is caused by the absence of an anti-halation layer on the back side of Kodak HIE film, this results in a scattering or blooming around the highlights that would usually be absorbed by the anti-halation layer in conventional films.
Frank Lloyd Wright's Rudin House: panchromatic film on the left, infrared on the right

The majority of black-and-white infrared art, landscape, and wedding photography is done using orange (15 or 21), red (23, 25, or 29) or visually opaque (72) filters over the lens to block the blue visible light from the exposure. The intent of filters in black-and-white infrared photography is to block blue wavelengths and allow infrared to pass through. Without filters, infrared negative films look much like conventional negative films because the blue sensitivity lowers the contrast and effectively counteracts the infrared look of the film. Some photographers use orange or red filters to allow slight amounts of blue wavelengths to reach the film, and thus lower the contrast. Very dark-red (29) filters block out almost all blue, and visually opaque (70, 89b, 87c, 72) filters block out all blue and also visible-red wavelengths, resulting in a more pure-infrared photo that usually looks more contrasty.

Certain infrared-sensitive films like Kodak HIE must only be loaded and unloaded in total darkness. Infrared black-and-white films require special development times but development is usually achieved with standard black-and-white film developers and chemicals (like D-76). Kodak HIE film has a polyester film base that is very stable but extremely easy to scratch, therefore special care must be used in the handling of Kodak HIE throughout the development and printing/scanning process to avoid damage to the film.

As of November 2, 2007, "KODAK is preannouncing the discontinuance" of HIE Infrared 35 mm film stating the reasons that, "Demand for these products has been declining significantly in recent years, and it is no longer practical to continue to manufacture given the low volume, the age of the product formulations and the complexity of the processes involved."[6] At the time of this notice, HIE Infrared 135-36 was available at a street price of around $12.00 a roll at US mail order outlets.

Arguably the greatest obstacle to infrared film photography has been the increasing difficulty of obtaining infrared-sensitive film. However, despite the discontinuance of HIE, other newer infrared sensitive emulsions from EFKE, ROLLEI, and ILFORD are still available, but these formulations have differing sensitivity and specifications from the venerable KODAK HIE that has been around for at least two decades. Some of these infrared films are available in 120 and larger formats as well as 35 mm, which adds flexibility to their application. With the discontinuance of Kodak HIE, Efke's IR820 film has become the only IR film on the market with good sensitivity beyond 750 nm, the Rollei film does extend beyond 750 nm but IR sensitivity falls off very rapidly.

20110708 Great Cluster in Hercules (M13)

I don't do a lot of Clusters, because they are so difficult to process. The high dynamic range and small color saturation variations have alluded me to date. This is only a very short experiment (15min of LRGB data).

The test which I referred to: I wrote a Filter wheel / Camera interface which I can pass parameters to upon start, and it operates the exposures and filter wheel so it can work unattended. It's the first part of a program I'm writing to be an All-in-1 acquisition software. So far so good - the data pulled from the camera was solid, the filter wheel operated flawlessly, and the metadata was recorded in the FITS files as intended. Next step is to incorporate this scripting into a windows application with GUI and combine it with real-time image monitoring/comparison with zoom/pan functionality.

AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker with zippered nylon tote bag and an Extra 350 Micro Filters (700 Total)

The AeroPress is an entirely new way to make coffee, American style or Espresso style for use in lattes, cappucinos and other espresso based drinks. AeroPress brews simply delicious coffee, 1-4 cups per pressing. Ideal water temperature and faster brewing yields rich flavor with lower acidity and without bitterness. Other brewing processes use near boiling water and long exposure to coffee grounds. Quickly brew a variety of coffee drinks including an Americano or an espresso-style shot for use in lattes or cappuccinos. Its total-immersion system permits extraction at a moderate temperature and a short brew time. Water and grounds are mixed together for 10 seconds, then gentle air pressure pushes the mix through a micro-filter in just 20 seconds, which avoids the bitterness of long processes such as drip brewing. The air pressure also gently squeezes the last goodness from the grounds, further enriching the flavor. The total brewing time of only 30 seconds results in an exceptionally smooth brew.
